Jupiter
22 May 2020 On the LHS is my first attempt at imaging big boy Jupiter. My 120mm diameter telescope has a theoretical maximum resolving power of 1 arc second. Jupiter is around 45 arc seconds in apparent diameter. On the RHS is an image that I took on 21 September 2020. This image shows Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS). In addition, the moon Io is visible just to the right of Jupiter, and its shadow is in sharp contrast on the surface. Overall, I think this image looks like a smiling face looking to the right :)These images are taken using 'lucky imaging', in which thousands of fast exposures are captured over several minutes. These are then analysed (by software just as AutoStakkert and Registax) to choose the clearest frames and combine them to improve the visible details. |
